Caring for the Sick
As a hospital we plan each year to increase access to healthcare to the underserved through medical community outreaches each quarter as a demonstration of God’s Love. Kairos hospital not only provides healthcare services but also health education and health promotion and creating awareness of services that are available at the hospital. Often times the lack of information makes people travel long distances seeking services that are within easy reach and at an affordable rate which is especially key for the uninsured. As part of a preamble to the medical camp a mini mobile dental camp was conducted offering free dental checkup and advice. This is an often neglected health service and we were able to reach 105 people.
On a bright and sunny Monday morning, a white ambulance snaked its way through the dusty and hot sleepy town of Bajjo, 5km NE of Seeta town. Curious faces of both children and adults peered at it with some attempting hesitantly to read out loud the inscriptions on the body of the ambulance- KAIROS HOSPITAL- KIGUNGA, LIFE MINISTRIES CHRISTIAN CENTRE. This was day 1 medical camp of a 3day outreach campaign(24-26th/Jan) and on board the ambulance was a team of 4doctors(including a visiting UK infectious disease specialist), 2nurses, 1midwife, 2laboratory technicians, hospital administrator and 2church volunteers from LMCC Seeta-Kigunga church.
The Kairos Hospital ambulance and its human cargo were deposited 6M from the entrance of the Bajjo town main Catholic church which shares the same compound as the adjacent primary school, the venue for the medical camp. Within minutes of setting up stations in the primary school classroom and reception and drug dispensing tent, the team briefed attendees and started offering services.
Services included hypertension and diabetes screening, nutritional advice, HIV, Hepatitis B and malaria laboratory screening. The team also provided care for common respiratory tract conditions, skin disorders as well as gastrointestinal and gynecological disorders. Those that required more investigations or interventions were invited to come to the hospital the following day or the day after with 10-35% discounts offered.
Day 2 of the medical camp was at the hospital parking lot starting from 9:30am and included immunisation of children for polio, hepatitis B, Pneumococcal pneumonia etc. We were also offering family planning services and imaging services in addition to the services menu offered in Bajjo. Though we had afternoon down pour which cut short our scheduled session, we attended to 116 clients. Those who attended had an opportunity to be taken round the hospital, sharing with them the vision of Kairos Hospital as well as the services offered and where they are offered. Dr. Mike Riste a visiting infectious disease specialist delivered a teaching session on Antibiotic stewardship, a global, with the 4resident doctors during the lunch break.
The final day of the medical camp had the biggest number attending of 217people with a significant proportion being the age range of 6-15yrs. It also demonstrated the need in the community with a 6yr old and 11yr old who turned at the camp having fits while in the waiting lines. We had a couple of middle aged ladies being diagnosed with diabetes. The huge disappointment for one had to do with stopping taking sugar with tea and soda! We closed with a get together of the entire team and appreciated what everyone had brought to the team, a vote of thanks especially for Dr. Mike as well as Joyce our former hospital Nurse In-charge.
